Trail Running Holiday Itinerary

Description

Located in the northernmost part of the province of Castellón, the Tinença de Benifassà marks the limits between the Valencian Community, Aragon and Catalonia. The solitude of its roads, only broken by the goats that appear here and there, is something worth living. Running.

Variety. It is probably the concept that best suits these mountains. Ravines, hills, trails, paths, tracks, diversity of Mediterranean vegetation with native species, fauna, … all in a land as friendly as hard and, above all, solitary.

Day 1: Meeting at the train station of Tortosa or La Aldea, transfer to the Boixar and lodging at Casa-Refugi el Boixar.
Day 2: Romanesque heritage of the Tinença of Benifassà

A day of visit for the old Romanesque heritage of the Tinença of Benifassà. We will discover the town of Coratxà, with its huge Tilo presiding over the square and also its thirteenth-century Romanesque church, located above the town dedicated to St. James the Apostle. Following our route we will reach the hermitage of San Cristóbal, a place of prayer and tranquility inhabited formerly by hermits.

Our steps will take us to the town of Castell de Cabres, located under a small mountain.

25 kms ; + 450 m – 450 m of elevation.
Day 3: The three Kingdoms Peak

On this route we will discover the mountain forests of the Massís del Port. We will make the Tossal dels Tres Reis summit where Aragon, Valencia and Catalonia join. It tells the legend that formerly the three Arab kings met without having to leave their dominions.

15 kms ; + 650 m – 650 m of elevation.

Day 4: The lammergeier

The lammergeier is one of the most beautiful birds we can see in the sky. In La Tinença a reintroduction project has begun so that this species returns to furrow our skies. If we are lucky we will be able to see the youngsters who have recently released and enjoy their majestic flight.

15 kms ; + 500 m – 500 m of elevation.

Day 5: Visit to Morella

Rest day, visit the monumental city of Morella, one of the most beautiful villages in the world.

Day 6: El Portell del Infern i el Salt de Robert

El Portell del Infern is located on the left bank of Barranco del Salt, at a height of 1000 msnm. This path was the old horseshoe path used by the inhabitants of La Tinença to move to La Senia. They went with donkeys and donkeys loaded with food, utensils and tools for sale in the markets. The passage under rocks of impressive height and the gully that opens to its side shows us the magnitude of the geological force that formed the Massif del Puerto, where the Tinença de Benifassà is integrated.

13 kms ; + 650 m – 650 m of elevation.

Day 7: The forest of beech trees of the Retaule

Immersed in the heart of the Els Ports Massif, the Fageda del Retaule (the beech forest of the Retaule) is the southernmost beech forest in Spain. This botanical relic is a box of surprises: beech, maples, lime trees, yew trees, hazel trees, holly trees, pine trees and boxwoods all roam at your ease under the imposing calcareous mass of Lo Catinell, in a landscape so impressive that you doubt that there may be a place like this in these latitudes and only 30 kilometers in a straight line of the Mediterranean Sea.

13 kms ; + 700 m – 700 m of elevation.

Day 8:

Exit to the airport.
